In March 2005, Federal Realty Investment Trust became the principal owner and developer at Assembly Square in Somerville, Massachusets. Since then, we have worked closely with Somerville’s elected officials and the community to realize our shared vision for this unique riverfront development. The new Assembly Square will be a modern-day urban village. More than just a prime shopping destination, it will be a gathering place for friends and family, where New Englanders can live, eat, work and play in a unique pedestrian, eco-friendly environment with a new MBTA Orange Line station. Indeed, as stated by Mayor Joseph Curtatone, “The time is now for Assembly Square.”
Federal Realty has recently filed its Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) on the Assembly Square redevelopment project for submittal to the State under the MEPA process. In this Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR), Federal Realty explains it's vision for a smart-growth redevelopment at Assembly Square and analyzes all of the impacts and benefits of the proposed project. The MEPA process is not a strict permitting process but rather a mechanism for public information gathering and dissemination. The Massachusetts Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs requires an environmental impact report to gather information from the proponent, local and state agencies and the public that will then be used in all of the future permitting processes that the project will have to go through. MEPA is a very public participation-oriented process and comments from the general public are strongly encouraged. Click here to participate. Click here to view the DEIR online.
